IRS Provides Tax Relief for Hurricane Sandy Victims
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the IRS is providing tax relief to affected individuals and businesses in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York. Various tax filing and payment deadlines from late October will be postponed, giving affected taxpayers until February 1, 2013 to file these returns. This postponement includes:
* Fourth quarter individual estimated tax payment, normally due January
* Payroll and excise tax returns and accompanying payments for the third and fourth quarters, normally due on October 31, 2012 and January 31, 2013 respectively
* Form 990 series returns with an original or extended deadline falling during this period
The IRS will automatically provide this relief to individuals or businesses in the disaster area: there is no need to contact the IRS to request it. Taxpayers who live outside the FEMA-designated disaster area that feel they qualify for this relief can call the IRS at 866.562.5227. Please check the IRS website for the most up-to-date list of affected counties.
