Tech Transfer: How Paycor combined software with services

Josh Pichler, Cincinnati Enquirer

"When the history of Paycor is written, 2012 will mark a turning point for the home-grown company: It broke ground on a new corporate headquarters and finalized its transition from a payroll-services firm to a full-fledged technology company.

"One could also make the case that Paycor, circa 2012, embodies many of the opportunities and challenges facing a region committed to developing and growing startup firms.

"The company, which Chief Executive Officer Bob Coughlin started in 1990 with $240,000, is on track to exceed $100 million in revenues this year. It's also creating the kind of high-paying information-technology jobs that civic and business leaders covet.

"It considers its latest product, Perform, a game-changer. More than 12,000 clients are using the Web-based human resources and payroll platform that launched this summer. It expects more than 20,000 to be using Perform by the end of 2013.

"At the same time, Paycor's push into software development puts the company squarely into a war for talent and highlights the demand for information-technology employees in the region.

"After several years of spending roughly 10 percent of its revenue on software development, Coughlin expects that will increase to 17 percent this year, or about $18 million."
