Don't Leave Key Insights from SHRM in New Orleans

We had a great time at SHRM this year and trust that you did, too. We also hope you took the opportunity to stop by our booth and chat for a few minutes! Once the excitement of attending such a vibrant conference such as SHRM wears off – and you get back to the grind of your day-to-day activities – it’s often far too easy to forget that you have important follow-up items left on your post-conference checklist. We’d like to help you out with this list of to-dos.
Network, Network, Network
Take all of those business cards you collected from presenters, fellow attendees, and vendors and enter their information into your contacts file. Be sure to also add any notes you may have taken so you’ll remember that information in the future. After you do that, connect with them on LinkedIn. You’re on LinkedIn, right? If not, now’s a great time to sign up and start building your professional network. You can also join HR industry-specific groups that can be helpful to you in your career.
Sharing is Caring
Gather all of your notes from the sessions you attended and share what you learned with your team. As with most conferences of its type, the organizers of SHRM provide breakout session presentations after the conference. Download the ones you found helpful, combine them with your notes, and create a brief presentation (or even a series of presentations) that you can discuss with your peers and your team.
Large conferences such as SHRM base future content, keynote and session speakers, and logistics on attendee feedback. Often they hand out surveys for sessions during the conference and will follow up with an overall conference survey once you return home. If you receive one, it’s important to fill it out, so your voice is heard and your ideas can potentially influence future events.
Put Your Learning into Practice
Attending a conference is costly – especially if your company sends multiple attendees – so you want to make sure your company gets the most bang for its buck. Compile all of your notes and look for items you highlighted, underlined or otherwise noted as being important. Likely, you’ll discover several ideas or tips that you and your team haven’t put into practice, or that can save your department time and money. Get to work, and be sure to document your accomplishments.
